New technology extends learning for MCCTC students
What does a podcast, wiki and online chat have to do with Biology and Chemistry? Everything, if you’re a student enrolled in the Biotechnology Program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical. Students are now using a new online course, enhancing their learning experience at MCCTC thanks to their instructor Tom Slaven.
Slaven and fellow instructor Bob Miller developed an online course for students enrolled in the program that acts as a supplement to their classroom education. Using the new site students can learn at their own pace and can access lessons, lab instructions, quizzes, PowerPoint presentations and forums. The site, created using the free course management system Moodle, offers students the opportunity to extend their learning beyond classroom lessons and absorb as much as they can. While enrolled in the Biotechnology Program, students can earn up to four college credits in chemistry and biology.
Students can also access the site outside of school, making it an ideal feature for students who may miss a day of class or for those who may need extra help.
With this new technology Slaven can monitor the amount of time students spend on the site, he can interact with them in real time if they have any questions, see student dialogue and see what areas students may need more help in. “This site is very easy for instructors to use and it’s very student friendly,” Slaven said.
Slaven is excited to offer his students this new technology and enhance their learning experience at MCCTC.
